Emirates to fly A380 services to South Korea

WAM DUBAI, Jan. 28, 2009 Emirates Airline announced that it would begin operating its ultra-modern and environmentally friendly A380 aircraft to Seoul’s Incheon International Airport from November 2009.

The new service is timed to coincide with Visit Korea Year in 2010, where the national government and the city of Seoul are joining forces with the private sector to promote South Korea as a destination for international tourism.

The new service represents the aviation world’s first A380 operation to Seoul, as well as Emirates’ first A380 service to North East Asia. It follows the successful deployment of Emirates’ A380s to New York and London, and soon-to-be-launched Sydney and Auckland.

Trade between South Korea and the UAE has grown by more than 150% over the past five years and is now worth over USD16 billion dollars a year. Growing economic relations is the result of a series of joint initiatives including the visit of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to South Korea, and subsequent visits by the Korean Chamber of Commerce ‘&’ Industry to the UAE.

The Samsung Corporation is currently completing construction of the world’s tallest building, the Burj Dubai, which will open later this year. South Korean exports to the UAE grew by over 50% in the first half of 2008 compared to the same period in 2007. Emirates leading export goods from South Korea in 2008 were mobile phones headed for Dubai and the Middle East.

Emirates’ A380 service will also support the South Korean government’s drive to make Incheon International Airport a major Asian hub.

“Seoul has been an extremely successful market for Emirates since we introduced services in 2005. In 2004 just 37,000* passengers a year travelled between Dubai and Seoul where as today it is over 260,000*. This new aircraft will allow us to further develop this market as well as encourage more tourism and trade to South Korea,” the Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline and Emirates Group, Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum, said.

“Incheon International Airport has invested significantly to prepare its infrastructure for A380 operations and we thank them and our ground handlers, Swissport, for their hard work to ensure the airport is so well equipped for our A380,” Sheikh Ahmed added.

The President and CEO of Incheon International Airport, CW Lee said the development was an important milestone. “This is an important milestone for the future of Incheon and aviation in South Korea. We have made major investments worth USD 4 billion to prepare the airport for the A380 and we are very happy to be soon welcoming this important aircraft,” he said.

“Incheon has won the world’s best customer service award three years in a row and introducing the A380 to Seoul will ensure the customer experience continues to blossom,” Mr Lee added.

Swissport Korea President, J.W. Kim noted that the “Incheon International Airport will be ready and well prepared for the A380 with new push-back tugs and de-icing equipment amongst other investments. Our specially trained staff are looking forward to welcoming the world’s most advanced new aircraft to South Korea.” The A380 is the world’s most environmentally-advanced aircraft with significant reductions in noise, emissions and fuel burn compared to other comparable aircraft.

Emirates A380’s revolutionary in-flight product includes onboard shower spas in the First Class cabin featuring signature products by the airline’s premium spa brand, Timeless Spa. The onboard lounge for First and Business class customers mirrors the ambience of an executive club and includes a bar with a wide range of beverages and canaps.

With flat-bed massage-equipped private suites in First Class, a new generation of intelligent seating and flat-beds in Business Class, mood-lighting, and a second-to-none in-flight entertainment system featuring over 1000 channels of on-demand entertainment, the Emirates’ A380 introduces a whole new dimension to luxury air travel.

Emirates currently operates daily flights to Seoul operated by a Boeing 777

Dubai Hotel Occupancy Up in for DSF

DUBAI – Dubai hotels are getting a boost with occupancy rates on the rise during the 14th Dubai Shopping Festival 2009.

The DSF annual event, which has become a tourism attraction, was launched on last January 14 and will end on February 15, has been bringing in both domestic and foreign visitors according to hoteliers.

Most leading hotels said they are experiencing an increase in occupancy and reservations.

“The first week of DSF had a rather good effect, we have witnessed a 10 per cent increase in hotel occupancy raising the room occupancy up to 81 per cent,” said Anke Glaessing, executive assistant manager of Al Murooj Rotana Hotel & Suites.

Most leading hotels are offering up to 60 per cent discount for their rooms and up to 20 per cent in top-tier restaurants.  “It’s a busy season, and the great shopping promotions just made it busier in the past week. Several big conferences are coming up and occupancy will increase considerably compared to the pre-DSF period,” said Tom Meyr, regional general manager for Inter Continental Hotel Projects in Dubai Festival City.

Dubai hotels, which have in recent months been suffering from lower occupancy levels amid the slowing global economy, have successfully collaborated with the Dubai Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) to lure back business and leisure tourists, said Meyr.

Aside from hotels, restaurants and tour operators on various DSF locations are also enjoying robust sales.

“The DTCM campaign and our promotions and discounts have really stirred the tourism market.” said Hosni Abdul Hadi, manager of Carlton Towers.

Caricaturist puts the smile on people’s faces this DSF

Jorge Raul is as unique as his caricatures. An avid traveller, the professional caricaturist has visited 99 countries and made Dubai his 100th stop to participate in Dubai Shopping Festival 2009. Jorge’s hands have created over 60,000 caricatures since he began sketching in 1975 and the artist is one among the talented participants in this year’s DSF.

Born in Argentina and now settled in Spain, Jorge says interaction with people is the key in street art. “If you are sketching on the street and want people to come and sit for you,   wit and humour are essential. I try to talk to passersby as much as I can and show them my works. A caricature, unlike normal drawings, depicts people in a humorous manner and I’m satisfied of good sketch when I see a smile on people’s faces.”

After years of creative work, Jorge can now finish a black and white caricature in just about ten minutes and a colour-caricature in about twenty. The artist is currently in Al Seef Street where visitors can get their sketches done in minutes. Jorge will head down to The Walk at JBR where he can be found from Jan 22 to Feb 13.

A caricature is either a portrait that exaggerates or distorts the essence of a person or thing to create an easily identifiable visual likeness, or in literature, a description of a person using exaggeration of some characteristics and oversimplification of others.
Caricatures can be insulting or complimentary and can serve a political purpose or be drawn solely for entertainment. Caricatures of politicians are commonly used in editorial cartoons, while caricatures of movie stars are often found in entertainment magazines.
The term is derived from the Italian caricare- to charge or load. An early definition occurs in the English doctor Sir Thomas Browne’s Christian Morals (first pub.1716).

Israel announces ceasefire after Killing 1200++ says Goals Accomplished

Israel is to halt its three week military offensive against Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has said.

He said Israel had achieved its aims and the unilateral ceasefire would start at 0200 (2400 GMT). But he said troops would remain in Gaza for now.

The announcement came after the 3 weeks long brutal killings of innocent people in Ghaza. A Hamas spokesman said it would not accept one Israeli soldier in Gaza.

Nearly 1,200 Palestinians have been killed since the violence began on 27 December. Thirteen Israelis have died.

The US has welcomed the ceasefire, saying it “expects that all parties will cease attacks and hostile actions immediately”.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon expressed relief, saying the ceasefire should be “the first step leading to the full withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza”.

Ethiopians Gebrselassie, Sertsu sweep at Dubai

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Haile Gebrselassie easily won the Dubai Marathon on Friday, but said steady rain throughout the race hampered his bid to claim the $1 million bonus on offer for breaking his own world record.

Gebrselassie finished in 2 hours, 5 minutes and 29 seconds — just 90 seconds off his record — to narrowly beat compatriots Deressa Edae Chimsa (2:07.54) and Wendimu Tsige (2:08.41). In results for Dubai Marathon 2009

The Ethiopians also dominated the women’s marathon event, with Bezunesh Bekele Sertsu winning in 2:24:02 after pulling away from countrywoman Atsede Habtamu Besuye (2:25.17) in the final stretch. Kenya’s Helena Loshanyang Kirop was third (2:25.35).

“Everybody was expecting me to break the world record here, but I am very pleased with the time I ran today,” said the 35-year-old Gebrselassie. “This is my best time in wet weather. It could have been much worse, but I’m really happy with the time.”

Gebrselassie was on pace to challenge his world mark of 2:03:59 set last year in Berlin. But he struggled against the rain in the second half of the race, which began at dawn along Dubai’s Gulf coastline.

“I saw the clouds ahead and it looked like it was going to be difficult,” he said. “Sometimes it’s not just about defeating time, sometimes you defeat yourself. When I saw the rain coming, I defeated myself. But it (a new record) will happen. I will come back next year.”

Sertsu, who finished second last year in Dubai, said the rain forced her to set a slower pace, but she had plenty left in the final stages to build her lead.

“Today was definitely one of the best races I’ve run,” said the 25-year-old.

Gebrselassie said his next goal is to attempt to reclaim the half-marathon record in The Hague, Netherlands, in March. Then there’s the 2012 Olympics, when he’ll be about eight months short of his 40th birthday.

“There’s a lot to look forward to in the future. We have the Olympic games in three years’ time and before that the 2010 Dubai Marathon. If you think about stopping somewhere it’s no good. You’ve got to think about doing more,” he added.

“If you set a date to retire; if you say you’re going to retire in two years’ time, you actually end up retiring at that very moment. So, I haven’t put any time (on retirement).”

Dubai is the world’s richest marathon. The $1 million world record bonus was in addition to the $250,000 winner’s check

Lack of Unity among Arab States on Gaza

Although the newspapers have been giving different viewpoints on why the Arab Leaders are not successful in saving the innocent Palastinians. There are many causes for this one may be the very fact that the Hamas was orignally a brainchild of Israel secondly their strong relations to Iran are also some of the reasons that Arab leaders are not able to unite on one stance. WAM DUBAI reported today , Jan. 16th, 2009: that a local UAE paper today slammed what it called “the great display of disunity among Arab countries with regard to the current onslaught in Gaza as disgraceful.

“In fact, the stark divisions in their opinions reflect a disappointing stance at a time of grave crisis. Gaza simply could not tolerate any of these divisions” said the Gulf News in an editorial.

According to the paper, the multiple (emergency Arab) summit propositions do not reflect the true stand of the people in the Arab world. “They do not represent the mass voices of protest that have been expressed in all Arab countries. The Arab street stands in full support of Gaza and its people, expressing strong condemnation of the Israeli attack.

Yet the sharp disagreements on when and how to convene a summit reflect a bitter reality, remarked the paper adding that “Arab regimes are advancing their own respective agendas. Hence, each party is deciding either to attend or boycott a summit based on whether the meet would support individualistic purposes rather than bring about an end to the horrors in Gaza.

Arab governments, it said, still remain isolated from their people, and never in history have they disagreed so starkly on the convening of a summit. In fact, across the Arab world, policies of the regimes have just kept widening the gap between those who are in positions of power and the people.

“No major steps have been taken to facilitate participation of the people in governance – let alone having an input or a say”, the paper continued. This has continued to be the case regardless of the fact that changes on the global scene have brought about dramatic transformations in terms of democratic practices and participatory elections.

“If the situation in Gaza is to be brought to an end, Arab regimes have to closely listen to the voice of their people”, concluded the Gulf News.

UAE & USA sign Bilateral Agreement for Peaceful Nuclear Energy Cooperation

WASHINGTON D.C. 16th January, 2009 (WAM): His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, Foreign Minister of the UAE, and United States Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice today signed a bilateral agreement for peaceful nuclear cooperation that enhances international standards of nuclear non-proliferation, safety and security.

The agreement which is Known as a “123 Agreement,” named after Section 123 of the US Atomic Energy Act, establishes a required legal framework for commerce in civilian nuclear energy between the two countries.

“This agreement will benefit both of our countries, and is another example of the strong relationship between the United States and the United Arab Emirates,” said Sheikh Abdullah. “Under the terms of this agreement, the UAE will gain access to significant capabilities and experience in the peaceful use of nuclear energy. This will allow the UAE to develop its civilian nuclear program to the highest standards of safety, security and non proliferation. The agreement will also open opportunities for US firms to be active participants in the UAE nuclear energy program.” The 123 Agreement follows the April 2008 signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in peaceful uses of nuclear energy between the two countries.

The UAE released a detailed policy document on the evaluation and potential development of peaceful nuclear energy in April of last year.

The UAE policy is based on the principles of complete operational transparency and the highest standards of safety, security and non-proliferation. The policy was developed following a study that projected massive increases in demand for electricity in the coming decades. The study determined that nuclear energy is a viable and compelling option for meeting the UAE’s future electricity demand.

These policy commitments include a pledge to forego any domestic fuel enrichment or reprocessing capability, in favour of long-term external fuel supply arrangements.

Additionally, the UAE policy calls for close and continuous coordination with the International Atomic Energy Agency, as well as cooperation with the governments and firms of responsible nuclear supplier nations, including the United States.

The agreement signed today reflects the UAE’s policy commitments and exceeds all of the guarantees and controls requirements of Section 123 of the US Atomic Energy Act. Various international experts have called the UAE’s program the “gold standard” approach to civil nuclear power development. Once signed, the executive branch forwards the agreement to the US Congress for review.

Additional Background: UAE and the Nonproliferation Regime: The UAE joined the Nonproliferation Treaty in 1996, is an International Atomic Energy Agency member, and cooperates with the Missile Technology Control Regime. The UAE is a partner-nation on the Global Initiative to Combat Nuclear Terrorism and a signatory to the Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI), which is aimed at stopping shipments of weapons of mass destruction, their delivery systems, and related materials worldwide.

The UAE supports the establishment of an international nuclear fuel bank under the auspices of the IAEA, as proposed by the Nuclear Threat Initiative. The goal of this international fuel bank is to help make nuclear fuel supplies from the international market more secure, by offering customer states in full compliance with their nonproliferation obligations reliable access to a nuclear fuel reserve under impartial IAEA control should their supply arrangements be disrupted. Financial commitments to the initiative have been made by the UAE, the United States, Norway and the European Union.

UAE Electricity Needs: The UAE has a critical need for new, clean, reliable sources of electricity. The national annual peak demand for electricity is calculated to more than double to 40,000 megawatts by 2020. Current, committed capacity can meet only half of this. After studying all viable forms of power generation, the UAE has determined that nuclear energy could make a significant contribution to meeting the electricity requirements of the UAE. As part of a diversified portfolio of power-generation assets, including renewable and traditional hydrocarbon energy sources, nuclear energy would free additional UAE hydrocarbon resources for the global market, reduce the UAE’s carbon footprint, assist in meeting the nation’s sustainability requirements, and provide a high degree of energy security for the UAE.

A ‘123 Agreement’ refers to Section 123 of the U.S. Atomic Energy Act of 1954, which will provide the legal framework for peaceful nuclear energy commerce between the UAE and the US. The US has more than twenty such agreements in place including with Egypt and Morocco.
