REGISTRATION OPENS FOR 2011 STANDARD CHARTERED DUBAI MARATHON

Dubai (UAE): With less than six months to go, registration has opened for the 2011 Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon, scheduled to get underway on January 21, 2011.

Competitors looking to sign up for the full marathon distance of 42.195km, the popular 10km event or the 3km Fun Run can register now by visiting the event’s official website www.dubaimarathon.org. In order to give organisers enough time to finalise all logistics, entries will close at midnight on December 31.

Held under the patronage of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, Ruler of Dubai, and staged under the aegis of the Dubai Sports Council, the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon has firmly established its position as one of the world’s leading road races thanks to prize-money of $1 million as well as a $1 million bonus for a new world record, courtesy of Dubai Holding.

“The 2010 event was a great success with thousands of runners from all over the world joining us to race over what we believe to be the fastest marathon course on the international circuit,” said event director Peter Connerton.

“Within minutes of opening up online registration, we were already receiving entries by the dozen so it shows how much runners look forward to competing in the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon. By signing up now, athletes have a full five months to train and prepare for what we hope will be another hugely successful event.”

The Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon event continues to attract a healthy turnout of overseas runners as well as thousands of local and expat athletes based in the emirate.

The 2010 event – which saw the men’s event won by Olympic legend Haile Gebrselassie – featured runners from countries as far afield as Mexico and Australia, while TV coverage of the race was seen by more than 200 million viewers worldwide.

“The Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon is one of the highlights of our sporting and social year ,” said Jeremy Parrish, CEO UAE for title sponsors Standard Chartered. “Not only does it allow us to enjoy the talents of many of the world’s finest distance runners – many of whom will be using the event as they countdown to the 2012 Olympics – it also gives us the opportunity to maintain our active role in the community as part of our commitment to be ‘Here for good’.

The launch of the registration process is the first of many announcements expected from event organisers as they finalise negotiations with elite athletes and sponsors alike. “We are looking into adding more activities around the event in 2011 to give runners and their families even more reasons to take part in the Middle East’s biggest marathon,” added Connerton.

Seawing Dubai Develops new tours web site

The aireal tour company of which offers Seaplane tour in Dubai is planning a new website to help encourage more people to enjoy aerial tours of Dubai and other emirates.

Seawings, formed in August 2007, offers holidaymakers short low flights over Dubai. This gives a chance to experience a unique view of some of the Dubai’s most famous attractions, including Burj Al Arab, Burj Khalifa, Palm Jumeirah, World Islands and the Dubai Creek.

The company has been working on the new website for a while and is hoping it will showcase the unusual tour options offered to visitors as well as improving customer service.

Marketing and communications manager Carine Duvignaud said: “The original idea was to create a website that would provide guests with an idea of what Seawings was about and to make the flight booking process easier.”

SCTDA to showcase Sharjah’s tourist attractions at ITB Asia

Sharjah, Oct. 17th, 2010 — Mohamed A. Al Noman, Director General of the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority in Sharjah, has reiterated the importance of increasing the number of tourists coming to the emirate from Asian markets.

This came shortly before the departure of a delegation from the Emirate of Sharjah to the International Tourism Bourse Asia (ITB Asia), which will be held at the Sontec Conference and Exhibition Centre in Singapore from 20 to 22 October.

Al Noman pointed out that the Authority is currently working on expanding in this market and are looking to enhance its level of presence by participating in annual exhibitions and special tourism bourses in order to raise the rate of flow of tourists to Sharjah.

The Authority’s participation in ITB Asia comes as part of its strategy and ongoing efforts to promote Sharjah’s tourism attractions and investment opportunities, as well as to boost the emirate’s position on the global tourism map, while confirming the success it has already achieved.

Speaking of the importance of the Asian market, Al Noman said: “In addition to our focus on the GCC and European markets during the past few years, we seek to take advantage of the Asian market by focusing on heritage, cultural and family tourism, eco tourism and elite tourism, as well as conferences. Our aim is to target Asian tourism markets such as China, Singapore and Hong Kong in this framework. The fact is that this market is one of the most promising markets to supply the region with tourists, and it will undoubtedly increase the percentage of tourism contribution to the GDP of the Emirate of Sharjah.” On Sharjah’s participation he said: “In line with its strategy, the SCTDA usually puts a series of activities and events on its annual agenda with the aim of highlighting and promoting Sharjah’s uniquely diverse tourism offerings, including heritage, cultural, entertainment and family attractions, in order to increase the flow of tourists to the emirate. Our participation in ITB Asia comes specifically as the flow of Asian tourists to the emirate is ever-increasing. In fact, Asian tourists accounted for 20 percent of the emirate’s total visitors up to the end of August this year.

“The SCTDA aims, through its participation in Asia’s leading tourism exhibition, to introduce Sharjah as a destination of choice and to further boost its position on the world tourism map. Our aim is also to promote the upcoming activities and major events that are planned for the rest of this year and the first quarter of 2011, namely the Sharjah Water Festival, the Sharjah Lights Festival and the Sharjah Grand Prix 2010 – the F1 Powerboat World Championships. There is generally great global interest in these unique festivals and events, which attract a large number of spectators and visitors from various cultural backgrounds”, he added.

Organized and led by the Authority, Sharjah’s delegation to ITB Asia includes representatives from various bodies and organizations within the emirate, including Sharjah International Airport Authority, Coral Beach Resort, Corniche Al Buhaira Hotel and Golden Tulip Hotel.

DTCM Announces Winners Of “Receptionist Of The Year 2010” Award

Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) has announced the winners of the “Receptionist of the Year” award which is organized by DTCM in coordination with the Dubai chapter of Association of Front Office Managers and Assistant Managers.

Yefgini Strokov from Ritz- Carlton Dubai was adjudged the winner, while Ms. Josimar Devlin from Millennium Airport Hotel Dubai came in second. Ms. Dian Mendoza from Le Royal Meridien Beach Resort and Spa won the third place. Fourteen contestants from various five-star hotels in Dubai took part in the competition, and the winner will represent Dubai in the international finals to be held in January 2011 in New Zealand.

The competition was divided into two rounds – the first round was held on September 25th, during which the contestants were interviewed by the judging panel for 30 minutes each and asked several technical questions. At the end of this round, six competitors were shortlisted for the final round held on October 2nd. During the final round, the competitors were required to answer five questions and take part in role playing, simulating a real hospitality work situation. The performance of each competitor was graded by a judging panel and the final score was the sum of the performance grades given by each of the five judges.

The judging panel included Ibrahim Yaqoot, DTCM’s Executive Director Corporate Support, Samy Abdul Fattah, DTCM’s Senior Specialist Corporate Support and Acting Director Training Solutions; Ms. Louise Oakley, Group Editor Hospitality of ITP; Ms. Cora de Conceicao-Stuart, General Manager of Media One Hotel and Mr. Steven Mueller, President of AICR Dubai, who was overseeing this competition. In addition, Tatiana Lomteva was the winner of the Receptionist of the year 2009.

The first place winner was awarded AED 10,000 and a Letter of Appreciation; in addition he will be fully sponsored to represent Dubai at the international competition of the David Campbell trophy hosted by New Zealand. The winner of the second place received AED 5,000 and the third place winner received AED 3,000. All the six shortlisted finalists received a Letter of Appreciation presented by Ibrahim Yaqoot and Steven Mueller.

Tourism industry stakeholders urged to take responsibility for sustainabili

Abu Dhabi, 14th Oct 2010 — Professor Harold Goodwin, Director of the UK’s International Centre for Responsible Tourism, a world leading expert on responsible tourism, is urging key industry stakeholders to accept responsibility for advancing a sustainable agenda and is joining a growing lobby which will press the case at next month’s World Green Tourism Abu Dhabi.

Professor Goodwin says the Abu Dhabi conference, which will run at Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) from November 22-24, could be a platform for change.

“For too long the major stakeholders have failed to take responsibility for their impacts and for making their businesses more economically, socially and environmentally sustainable,” says Prof. Goodwin. “Sustainable development, sustainable tourism, sustainability have all too often been dismissed as someone else’s responsibility – there has been a failure to act. Businesses have argued that it is for others to solve the problems.” he added

Prof. Goodwin will address a special World Green Tourism Abu Dhabi session devoted to Taking Responsibility for Making Tourism Sustainable’ where he will be joined by : Nikki White, Head of Destinations and Sustainability, the Association of British Travel Agents; Roddy Gordon, VP Sales and Marketing, Tamani Hotels and Resorts, UAE and Faith Taylor, VP Sustainability and Innovation, Wyndham Worldwide, USA . The session will be chaired by Lelei LeLaulu, Co-chairman of Hawaii’s Innovation for Sustainable Development Centre.
“While the industry will be urged on to stronger action at World Green Tourism Abu Dhabi, delegates will also hear case studies of how sustainable initiatives can be translated into economic reality,” said Rick Theobald, Event Director, Streamline Marketing Group (SMG), which is organising the event.

World Green Tourism Abu Dhabi’s powerful speaker platform also boasts Gopinath Parayil, the 36-year-old founder and chief executive of India’s leading responsible travel company The Blue Yonder and Bruce Poon Tip, founder of Gap Adventures, the world’s largest adventure travel company, both of whom will outline how pioneering sustainability can deliver significant socio-Economics.

World marketing guru Kotler launches World Marketing Forum Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi, 13th Oct. 2010 (WAM): In conjunction with the Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT), world renowned marketing expert Professor Philip Kotler today launched a number of ground breaking initiatives, including the annual World Marketing Forum – Abu Dhabi (WMF).

Professor Kotler signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research and Chancellor of the Higher Colleges of Technology, at the HCT’s Abu Dhabi Women’s College city campus, during the Professor Kotler’s seminar, Marketing 3.0 – Values Driven Marketing.

The annual WMF will be held in Abu Dhabi and will host an invited guest list of CEOs and CMOs from the world’s leading corporations, including Fortune 500 companies.

HCT Vice Chancellor Dr Tayeb Kamali said the WMF will bring the world’s marketing focus to the UAE.
“The Forum will be the premium global arena for sharing best practices in marketing, as well as showcasing examples of Corporate Social Responsibility,” Dr Kamali said.

The MoU between HCT and Kotler Impact also provided for the creation of the Kotler Research Centre (KRC) at the Centre of Excellence for Research and Training in Abu Dhabi. The KRC will focus on building research capabilities in Professor Kotler’s Marketing 3.0, values-based marketing concepts.
Under the agreement the KRC will provide opportunities for the world’s leading academics to conduct further research on businesses in a socially-networked environment.

The MoU will also see the establishment of the Kotler Chair of Marketing at the Higher Colleges of Technology, with the emphasis on disseminating of the latest thinking in values-based marketing. HCT and Kotler Impact will also explore the creation of the WMF Hall of Fame for Excellence in Marketing that recognizes and showcases best practices from around the world.

Professor Kotler said he was excited about Abu Dhabi being at the centre of new marketing concepts.
“These are four very exciting initiatives and I am honored to have my name associated with them,” Prof Kotler said.

“Until now there has never been anything like the World Marketing Forum, where we will bring the best thinkers in marketing from industry, commerce and academia to Abu Dhabi. It will be like the World Economic Forum or the World Business Forum.” At his only UAE seminar Professor Kotler introduced the capacity audience to his new model of marketing, described as values driven marketing. The corporate and marketing executives in the audience were given an insight by the guru of marketing into how corporations review their marketing strategies and how they market their products to clients and consumers.

Professor Kotler, who invented the four Ps’ of marketing and Social Marketing, designed the concept of values driven marketing in the wake of the disastrous global financial crisis to assist companies rebound, reset growth potential and address challenges of doing business.

His new marketing model (Marketing 3.0) treats customers as technology savvy, highly motivated members of a community and not just as consumers. He said after the effects of the global financial crisis the emphasis was on product, people and planet.

Arabian Hotel Investment Conference 2011 Advisory Board meeting discusses future of Mena hotel industry

The Arabian Hotel Investment Conference (AHIC 2011) Advisory Board, comprised of over 40 of the most influential names in the Middle East hospitality industry, gathered today at the Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management in Dubai to discuss the future of the hotel sector in the Middle East and North Africa ahead of the 2011 conference.

The Advisory Board members discussed the key challenges and opportunities that are currently facing the hotel sector, debated what issues will be setting the agenda for the industry in the year ahead, in order to start planning the themes and programme for the Seventh Annual AHIC event, being held in May 2011 at Madinat Jumeirah, Dubai.

Key stakeholders that met today as part of the Advisory Board meeting included key advisors, investors and government representatives from across the Middle East and Africa, including: Sheikh Mubarak Al Abdullah Al Mubarak Al Sabah, Chairman, Action Hotels, Muhammad Al Amir, Managing Director, Riyada International Hotels ‘&’ Resorts Co. Ltd, Dr Salah Al-Bukayyet, Deputy Secretary General – Investments, Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities, Paul Bell, Managing Director, ALDAR, Joe Sita, President, IFA Hotel Investments, Richard W. Riley, Abu Dhabi National Hotels and Jalil Mekouar, Managing Director, Jones Lang LaSalle Hotels MEA A presentation was also given by Jalil Mekouar, which highlighted that the Mena region is witnessing a stabilisation in the Average Daily Rates (ADRs), but market conditions continue to impact performances in some cities, such as Abu Dhabi, Doha and Muscat.

Mekouar said, “The uncertain economic outlook will continue to have an impact in the short term, but the region remains an attractive destination for investment and the market remains robust for astute investors looking to potentially access medium to long term returns.” “The Mena markets have recently witnessed the construction of a large number of hotel and hospitality-related developments, though many projects have been delayed or cancelled due to the global economic downturn. Nevertheless, the supply pipeline is still significant with the region’s hotel room supply poised to increase from 640,000 rooms to 730,000 rooms over the next five years, through to 2015,” he added.

Hotel performance within the region has been mixed over the past year with a number of GCC markets seeing declines while those in the Levant and North Africa starting to witness an upturn. Markets such as, Beirut and Damascus have seen large increases in Revenue Per Available Room (RevPAR) due to limited growth in supply, and are expected to experience continued growth, according to the Jones Lang LaSalle Hotels Mena House View for July 2010.

The interactive programme for this year’s Advisory Board meeting included discussion sessions on issues surrounding the sector, such as ownership and management structures, recent developments and agreements in the region, transactions, acquisitions and strategies for growth, geographic markets, product opportunities and brand strategies.

Jonathan Worsley, Chairman, Bench Events, commented, “We are looking forward to AHIC 2011, where we hope that the anticipated recovery in market conditions will have started to filter through to the hotel and hospitality sector. We are already beginning to see an increase in investment and M’&’A activity in the sector which I believe signals the start of a sustained recovery, which was one of the major themes of the 2010 event held earlier this year.” The Advisory Board meeting also offered a great opportunity for Emirates Academy students who were asked to brainstorm the themes and content for AHIC 2011 Conference Sessions, with the support of some of the industry experts, helping them to get a top level understanding of the major areas for discussion in the hotel industry.

The Seventh Annual AHIC 2011 event, which is organised by MEED and Bench Events, will take place at the Madinat Jumeirah from April 30th-May 2nd 2011. Khalifa University and IAEA Vienna to establish an e-Learning Portal.

Khalifa University of Science, Technology and Research (KUSTAR) and the Vienna based International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has signed an agreement or “Practical Arrangements”, to establish an e-Learning Portal.

This on-line resource and learning website provides materials that supplement classroom studies in the UAE and the region.

Under the terms of this agreement KUSTAR will cooperate with the IAEA to establish an e-Learning Portal at KUSTAR. The new e-Learning Portal recently launched its pilot operation, at the KUSTAR Abu Dhabi campus. The web portal contributes towards the United Arab Emirates’ effort to educate the experts needed to drive and sustain the nation’s peaceful nuclear power program.

The signing ceremony was attended by Hamad Ali Al Ka’abi, Ambassador, Permanent Mission of UAE and Prof. Tod Laursen, KUSTAR President. Representing IAEA was Yury A. Sokolov, Deputy Director General and Head of the Department of Nuclear Energy. Other attendees also included, Abdulhamid Nassouri, Executive Commercial Director, Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENCE), Dr. William Travers, Director General of the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR), and Korean Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) President Yang Myhung-seung.

Commenting on the new agreement, Prof. Tod Laursen, President, KUSTAR, said “We at KUSTAR are committed to the role we play in human capacity building in the United Arab Emirates and on this occasion, specifically, in the areas of nuclear engineering, science and technology.
