Tamer Hosny thrills fans at DSF

The Festival Centre at Dubai Festival City witnessed a stampede of thousands of Tamer Hosny’s fans, gathered to watch and hear the renowned singer perform. Donning the Palestinian scarf as a mark of solidarity with the people of Gaza, the singer performed some of his best hits during the four-hour concert with the opening act performed by DJ Cowboy. After the concert, Zahrat Al Khaleej, a popular Arabic magazine, handed Tamer the award for the Best Arabic Singer 2008.

Tamer Hosny born in Cairo, on August 16, 1977) is an Egyptian singer, actor and composer. He was initially featured on Free Mix mixtapes from Free Music, an Egyptian music production company. His breakthrough single “Habibi Wenta B’eed” gave him success.

Tamer mother is Syrian, but she had lived all her life in Egypt. She brought up Tamer and his elder brother Hossam in the absence of their father, Hosny Sherif. Tamer Hosny grew up with a passion for soccer and played it professionally for nine years, seven years in El Ahly club and two years in El Zamalek club. He was recognized by Mahrous, manager and owner of Free Music. He later on signed a contract with Free Music in 2002. Tamer didn’t debut, as most people believe, with Sherine’s first mixtape. instead he was featured in previous mixtapes, and one of them featured other artists like Khaled Agag and Mohamed Mounir. He graduated from October Six University, with a Bachelor’s degree in Media Studies.

Hosny starred in the 2003 Egyptian movie, Halet Hobb (A State of Love). The movie featured music by Hosny himself. He produced songs called Aktar Haga Heya Di, Eragly, and Soutek

In 2004, he released his first studio album as a solo artist. Titled Hobb, the album featured the single “Arrab Habibi”. His hit, “Arrab Habibi”, was played on satellite music channels and became popular.

The movie Sayyed El Atfy was released in 2005, and featured 2 songs. “Koll Marra” and “Nour Einy”, both were performed within the movie. The full versions of the songs accompanied the performance in addition to scenes from the movie were made into music videos. They were initially exclusive to Melody Hits channel.

At the end of March 2007, Hosny released his latest album “Ya Bent El-Eih”. The album featured 13 songs, nine of them were stolen and leaked on the internet a week before the official release.

In 2007 Tamer Hosny released an album of Islamic and Ramadan themed songs, called Il Ganna Fe Biotna (Heaven is in our Homes). It was released on 10th September 2007.

Dubai Hotel Occupancy Up in for DSF

DUBAI – Dubai hotels are getting a boost with occupancy rates on the rise during the 14th Dubai Shopping Festival 2009.

The DSF annual event, which has become a tourism attraction, was launched on last January 14 and will end on February 15, has been bringing in both domestic and foreign visitors according to hoteliers.

Most leading hotels said they are experiencing an increase in occupancy and reservations.

“The first week of DSF had a rather good effect, we have witnessed a 10 per cent increase in hotel occupancy raising the room occupancy up to 81 per cent,” said Anke Glaessing, executive assistant manager of Al Murooj Rotana Hotel & Suites.

Most leading hotels are offering up to 60 per cent discount for their rooms and up to 20 per cent in top-tier restaurants.  “It’s a busy season, and the great shopping promotions just made it busier in the past week. Several big conferences are coming up and occupancy will increase considerably compared to the pre-DSF period,” said Tom Meyr, regional general manager for Inter Continental Hotel Projects in Dubai Festival City.

Dubai hotels, which have in recent months been suffering from lower occupancy levels amid the slowing global economy, have successfully collaborated with the Dubai Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) to lure back business and leisure tourists, said Meyr.

Aside from hotels, restaurants and tour operators on various DSF locations are also enjoying robust sales.

“The DTCM campaign and our promotions and discounts have really stirred the tourism market.” said Hosni Abdul Hadi, manager of Carlton Towers.

Caricaturist puts the smile on people’s faces this DSF

Jorge Raul is as unique as his caricatures. An avid traveller, the professional caricaturist has visited 99 countries and made Dubai his 100th stop to participate in Dubai Shopping Festival 2009. Jorge’s hands have created over 60,000 caricatures since he began sketching in 1975 and the artist is one among the talented participants in this year’s DSF.

Born in Argentina and now settled in Spain, Jorge says interaction with people is the key in street art. “If you are sketching on the street and want people to come and sit for you,   wit and humour are essential. I try to talk to passersby as much as I can and show them my works. A caricature, unlike normal drawings, depicts people in a humorous manner and I’m satisfied of good sketch when I see a smile on people’s faces.”

After years of creative work, Jorge can now finish a black and white caricature in just about ten minutes and a colour-caricature in about twenty. The artist is currently in Al Seef Street where visitors can get their sketches done in minutes. Jorge will head down to The Walk at JBR where he can be found from Jan 22 to Feb 13.

A caricature is either a portrait that exaggerates or distorts the essence of a person or thing to create an easily identifiable visual likeness, or in literature, a description of a person using exaggeration of some characteristics and oversimplification of others.
Caricatures can be insulting or complimentary and can serve a political purpose or be drawn solely for entertainment. Caricatures of politicians are commonly used in editorial cartoons, while caricatures of movie stars are often found in entertainment magazines.
The term is derived from the Italian caricare- to charge or load. An early definition occurs in the English doctor Sir Thomas Browne’s Christian Morals (first pub.1716).
