Dubai, December 12, 2008: The Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) has announced that its 2008 ‘surprise film’ will be Rachel Getting Married, starring Anne Hathaway and Debra Winger. The film will show on December 13 at 17:00 at the Madinat Arena, following Nicolas Cage’s presentation of the Outstanding Filmmaker of the Year award to producer Charles Roven.
Roven is one of America’s highest-grossing producers, with The Dark Knight, starring the late Heath Ledger, Brothers Grimm, Get Smart, and the upcoming Season of the Witch to his credit.
Rachel Getting Married stars Anne Hathaway as Kym, the troubled black sheep of a family about to celebrate the wedding of their beautiful younger daughter Rachel (Rosemarie DeWitt). However, Kym’s constant drama-seeking and reminders of family friction and tragedy threaten to dampen the joyful occasion. Much of the cast is made up of musicians, performers and friends of director Jonathan Demme (The Manchurian Candidate, Silence of the Lambs), who bring a warm authenticity to a film that feels like an unrehearsed home movie that effortlessly makes the audience care about its flawed characters’ happiness. The film has received rave reviews from critics for its incredible performances and strong advocacy of its characters, who are as loveable as they are frustrating.
