Abu Dhabi to host World Green Tourism Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi, 27th June 2010 – World Green Tourism Abu Dhabi, the international conference and exhibition being held in the UAE capital this November, has won the patronage of Sheikh Sultan bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, Chairman of Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority.
Sheikh Sultan, a noted promoter of sustainability practices, will also deliver the opening address at the inaugural event which will be held at Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) from November 22-24.
“We in Abu Dhabi are building an industry to make a difference on a number of levels – economically, to our social fabric and to the preservation of our cultural heritage and natural assets – in short, we are working not just for immediate benefits, but for the future. We are ensuring the efforts of today are sustained for the long-term, and this event will help ensure our initiatives are recognised and replicated across the public and private sectors in Abu Dhabi, regionally and across the globe. We also recognise that we still have much to learn and the presence of so many industry leaders will offer valuable insight to help us achieve our goals,” said Sheikh Sultan.
“We look forward also to discovering the latest sustainability techniques and methodologies which we anticipate being promoted at the World Green Tourism Abu Dhabi exhibition -it will be a window to future practices.” Having chaired ADTA since its 2004 inception, Sheikh Sultan has promoted sustainability as a core value for the organisation as it works to develop Abu Dhabi into a world-class destination which has grown from receiving 960,000 hotel guests in 2004 to 1.54 million last year and to being recommended by Lonely Planet and Frommer’s in their respective Top Ten recommended destinations to visit in 2010. He also chairs the Al Ain Wildlife Park ‘&’ Resort, a World Green Tourism Abu Dhabi Gold Sponsor.
ADTA has established its own Environmental Health and Safety Management System (EHSMS) which has become a world-first in being on the only one of its kind which embraces an entire tourism segment. Focussing initially on the hospitality sector it calls on accommodation providers to design their own EHSMS systems with annual targets for water, energy and waste-to-landfill savings.
World Green Tourism Abu Dhabi is designed to give travel and tourism industry leaders and investors greater insights into sustainability within the sector and how it can be used to enhance business outcomes. It is being organised by the UAE’s Streamline Marketing Group (SMG).
“Sheikh Sultan will set the tone for an event which we believe will have a tangible impact on the way tourism-related functions are managed in this region,” said Rick Theobald, Event Director, SMG. “Through his different roles encompassing government, tourism, investment and development, Sheikh Sultan has helped shaped Abu Dhabi’s transformation into a leading tourism destination in an environmentally, socially and culturally aware manner.”

Reservations for the International Hunting and Equestrian Exhibition exceed 90%.

Abu Dhabi, 21st June 2010 — With support from the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH), the Emirates Falconers Club (EFC) is organising the eighth session of the International Hunting and Equestrian Exhibition Abu Dhabi 2010 (ADIHEX). The Exhibition runs between the 22nd and 25th of September, 2010, and is held under the patronage of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative in Al Gharbia (the Western Region) of Abu Dhabi, and Chairman of the EFC. It is a unique event of its kind in the Middle East.

Mohammed Khalaf Al Mazrouei, Director General of ADACH and Chairman of the Organizing Committee of ADIHEX, said the event had been organised with the enthusiasm and leadership of the United Arab Emirates in order to preserve the country’s civilization and cultural heritage. It is anticipated that the event will be a great success due to the activation and promotion of the values and principles of a cultural dialogue between nations and peoples.

He stated that hunting and equestrianism are the sports favoured by UAE parents and grandparents, who were taught by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. He was a pioneer in the field of sustainable hunting and the conservation of heritage and wildlife species. He paid a visit to the inaugural session of ADIHEX in 2003.

Mazrouei added that today this approach forms a substantial part of ADACH’s strategy to maintain the cultural heritage of Abu Dhabi, in conjunction with directions of HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, and with the support and continued assistance of HH General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces.

Meanwhile, Abdullah Al Qubaisi, Director of ADIHEX and Director of Communication Department at ADACH, said that for the first time the Exhibition will organise the World Arabian Horse Racing Conference. Hundreds of experts, researchers and interested people from more than twenty countries from around the world will participate in this event. Those involved will discuss the various issues relating to race horses, their characteristics, affairs and breeding.

Qubaisi revealed that interest in the Exhibition is substantial, with reservations on the next session of the event exceeding 90%, despite the increased exhibition space at the previous session. He noted that 437 companies, representing twenty-eight countries, have already confirmed their participation in the ADIHEX.

Global market leaders have fully booked up the Guns ‘&’ Weaponry Hall. Amongst the international exhibitors are VO Gun ‘&’ Rifle Makers Sweden, the company that produces some the world’s most exclusive handmade rifles, used for both hunting purposes and as collectors’ items. .

In the last ADIHEX edition, VO Guns recorded rifle sales of over AED 3 million over a period of only four days. VO Guns has been an exhibitor at ADIHEX since 2003.

SSE, the exclusive distributor for Polaris in the UAE, Lebanon, Qatar, Oman and other neighbouring Gulf States, is returning to ADIHEX for another year.

The world’s largest manufacturer of all terrain vehicles, rangers, and specialized sporting equipment is showcasing the very latest in outdoor sports vehicles and apparel for 2010.

The Falcon Centre, renowned falconry breeders, will be taking part in the exhibition for the third consecutive year. Due to their unparalleled success at ADIHEX 2009, the Falcon Centre has doubled the size of its stand this year.

Also participating is the Marine and Fishing section at ADIHEX, which has always presented an exciting opportunity for fishing, diving and marine experts and enthusiasts.

For the very first time at ADIHEX, Premier for Equipment will be showcasing their helicopter, which is used for marine fishing. Marine fishing professionals and enthusiasts will be invited to explore this machine, as well as look at other types of marine fishing equipment.

Hayaari Sub, another exhibitor to return to ADIHEX, will provide visitors with the opportunity to purchase spear-fishing and free-diving gear, and register for marine, diving, and fishing excursions, certified by A.I.D.A or Apnea Academy.

ADIHEX is expected to attract a large number of visitors – around 100,000 over four days – as it is the ultimate networking opportunity; it brings together buyers, enthusiasts and leading decision makers in the industry.

Abu Dhabi And Martial Arts?

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) consists of 7 states, termed emirates, which are located in the southeast of the Arabian Peninsula in Southwest Asia on the Persian Gulf.

The three most well-known emirates are Sharjah, Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Abu Dhabi is the capital and second largest city. It is also the country’s center of political, industrial, and cultural activities.

One of the martial arts activities that has been gaining in international reputation is submission fighting.

Abu Dhabi and martial arts?

Sheik Tahnoon Bin Zayed Al Nayan, who happens to be one the sons of the former President of the UAE, Sheik Zayed, has been the driving force in introducing martial arts to his home country.

While studying in the United States he started to learn more about grappling which led him to training in BJJ (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu).

A man with an open mind and an eagerness to learn, Sheik Tanoon also took up Russian Sambo, freestyle wrestling and Muay Thai in which he became an expert in all. A true mixed martial artist!

He sounds like our kind of guy!

After getting back to Abu Dhabi he immediately went about in creating a combat center to provide his people with the opportunity to study and learn more about martial arts. It was named the Abu Dhabi Combat Center or short ADCC.

The man of vision and action that the Sheik is, he introduced a tournament in which the world’s best and most famous grapplers and submission fighters would compete again each other.

This tournament is simply known as the ADCC World Submission Wrestling Tournament. It has become THE submission grappling event in the world and is being copied across the globe.

To give you an idea of the caliber of competitors who have fought at this tournament are for example Renzo Gracie, Royler Gracie, Mark Kerr, Tito Ortiz, Jean Jacques Machado, Rigan Machado, Rolles Gracie, Fabricio Werdum, Josh Barnett, Vitor Belfort, Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza, Roger Gracie, Dean Lister, Jake Shields and many more. Impressed? I certinly am.

Translated from the local language, Abu Dhabi means ‘father of gazelle’. In 2007, Fortune Magazine voted the city as the richest in the world and it is also the home of the Emarati Royal Family. With history dating back more than 3,000 years, and its roots stemming from fishing and nomadic tribes, Abu Dhabi is hardly recognizable from when they discovered oil over 50 years ago. Sunny clear skies are evident all year through, with the weather being cooler from November to March. Water sports are a great tourist activity on Lulu Island while the surrounding desserts will capture your heart while you are on safari or give you some heart pumping action when doing some off road driving in a 4WD. Watching camel races or going on a camel ride is also another popular tourist activity whilst in Abu Dhabi.

Another popular activity that tourists partake in is cruises on the Corniche. Prices range from being as affordable as AED 80 to luxury liner cruises, where one can book an entire boat for a duration that you please. The most traditional form of cruise available on the Corniche is one that is taken on a local boat called a dhow. These traditional boats are beautifully decorated and a typical cruise will include a light meal as well. The Corniche is home to many attractions, such as parks, palaces, hotels and fountains. Cruises can be taken either during the day or at night, whilst during the day one can appreciate all the attractions around, and at night the cityscape is bathed in lights makes for some picture perfect moments.

A tourist can easily partake in a scenic Corniche cruise from the famous Millennium Hotel Abu Dhabi that sits just along the Corniche stretch. Island hopping in….Abu Dhabi

Think of Abu Dhabi and endless desert comes to mind. That and a goldmine of oil fields.

What comes as an unexpected yet welcome surprise is the Emirate’s in fact booming hospitality industry, cultural development and rich wildlife.

With nearly 200 islands lying off its shores, Abu Dhabi is the latest and certainly most glamorous destination for island hopping – without the monotonous cliché of just sand, sun and sea at every stop.

Take Yas Island, home to the new Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. In true Emirati style, this circuit is destined to be the Monaco of the Middle East, with everything bigger, better and oh-so-decadent. The island also offers numerous adrenaline rushes, with a Ferrari Theme Park, a water park, several world-class golf courses and polo grounds. About 130km west of Abu Dhabi lies Bu Tinah, part of the Marawah Marine Biosphere Reserve, the first in the region to be recognized by UNESCO and a contender for the ‘New 7 Wonders of Nature’. With a rich marine ecosystem and towering mangroves, Bu Tinah is home to a number of rare species, including the endangered hawksbill sea turtle, over 800 dugongs and the occasional Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin.

For those in search of safari adventures, Sir Bani Yas Island offers a unique experience: originally the private sanctuary of the late ruler and founder of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the island now offers those in search of the novel the chance to explore, with game drives, guided walks and mountain biking through the desert hinterlands as well as luxurious accommodation at Desert Islands Resort & Spa by Anantara.

With over half the island devoted to a wildlife reserve as well as a bird sanctuary, visitors will encounter a myriad of free-roaming animals – different sub-species of rare gazelles and antelope, herds of spotted deer, the strange Barbary sheep (a species of goat-antelope native to Africa), mesmerizing flocks of white flamingos at sunrise and the prized Arabian oryx, found only on Sir Bani Yas.

With the Emirate’s latest project – the massive, multi-billion dollar development on Saadiyat Island – already underway, Abu Dhabi is set to become the art centre of the East, with a planned Louvre and Guggenheim Museum, again the masterpiece of Frank Gehry. With so many gems to offer, a relatively untouched archipelagic haven surrounded by turquoise waters and unrivalled in decadence and luxury, Abu Dhabi is well on its way to becoming the destination – the new playground of the adventurous elite.

Abu Dhabi Golf Championship 2010 – Paul Lawrie in the swing

Abu Dhabi Golf Championship 2010 Masters Odds: PAUL LAWRIE had fierce family rivalry to thank for his scorching start at the Abu Dhabi Championship yesterday.

The Scot soared to just a shot off the lead with a flawless six-under 66 – his best opening round for more than two years.

And Lawrie put his stunning show down to having spent the last fortnight locked in battle with his two golf-mad sons on a nine-hole course in Dubai.

That preparation helped the 1999 Open champ reel off six birdies on the National course yesterday to sit among nine players in a share of fourth, while Ian Poulter tops the board on seven under with fellow Englishman Richard Bland and South Africa’s Keith Horne.

Lawrie said: “We were over in Dubai with the kids for nearly two weeks and they have a nine-hole course at Jebel Ali so I played a lot of golf over the festive break.

“I didn’t practise and just warmed up playing nine holes each day with Craig and Michael – they are both extremely keen.

“Craig is 14 and plays off eight and Michael, who’s 11, is down to 14-handicap so they are both very handy. It’s tough to beat them but I did!

“So I’m not surprised to have made a great start because I have played a lot of golf with my two boys and hit the ball really well. It’s just nice to be back.”

Lawrie’s score was his lowest first-round tally since he began the 2007 Dunhill Links Championship with a 66.

And the highlight came with a great escape at the par-five eighth, which he was playing as the 17th.

Lawrie found a fairway bunker with his tee shot then slipped while playing his three wood out of the sand. The ball veered far right into a waste area from where he managed to get up and down for birdie.

Joint leader Poulter saved the best for last with a brilliant 70-foot downhill putt on 18.

He said: “I hit it probably 10 feet too hard but it was on line and lucky enough it hit the back of the hole then popped up and dropped.

“I wasn’t expecting to come out quite as fast as that after a five-week break but I will certainly take it.”

Alongside Lawrie on six under are Alvaro Quiros and Sergio Garcia plus world No. 10 Rory McIlroy.

Problems And Prospects For Abu Dhabi Real Estate In 2010

Though it is Dubai that has been in the forefront of the news, the effects of the economic slowdown, involving construction and real estate has been felt all across the Middle East. 2009 was a particularly bad year for Dubai, but other emirates like Abu Dhabi are also reeling from the impact of the global financial crisis. Thankfully, the economic managers in Abu Dhabi have been more astute in adopting various fiscal measures and stimulus packages to combat the negative effects of the economic downturn.

Although the effects of the economic crisis were still being felt in the last quarter of 2009, the residential market in Abu Dhabi is showing signs of stabilizing. Rental rates had declined all through the year, albeit at a slower rate each quarter. It was thought that affordable rentals and better quality alternatives in Dubai apartments influenced weaker residential demand levels in Abu Dhabi properties.

Elsewhere, substantial portions of planned residential projects were temporarily put on hold with delays at Ream Island and Al Raha Beach. However, the expected completions at the Khalifa A and Al Reef projects will help in easing rents, reducing pressure for both residents and occupiers looking to expand their workforce within Abu Dhabi.

Annual rents for apartments posted the strongest performance with a one bedroom apartment down 4 percent compared to 3rd Qtr 2009. In the prevailing situation, landlords and agents are now more open to negotiations with tenants.

The sales market also started to show indications of a slight upturn in fortunes, with increases in both inquiries and the number of sales transactions. However transactional volumes are anticipated to rise gradually, with no return to the levels reached during the first six months of 2008.

The easing of rents and increasing power of tenants in negotiations are expected to continue in the short term. In the office market, prime rents continue to slide and are down 45 percent from peak prices seen in 2008. A number of key commercial developments are still quoting rates of AED 3,000 per square meter per annum regarding property for sale in Abu Dhabi.

Despite the comparatively low rents, getting tenants still poses a challenge for both owners and agents. Increased availability of rental spaces provides end users with greater accommodation options and improved bargaining power with landlords.

Commercial demand remains focused towards smaller office units. While vacancy rates for office accommodation during the third quarter of 2009 remained low at around 2 percent, the impact of new upcoming units and weaker demand for office accommodation could see this rate go up during the course of 2010.

Meanwhile, amendments to commercial law reducing the levels of capital required have encouraged an increase in start up businesses, which has in turn expanded the numbers of potential commercial tenants. If the government continues to make the emirate’s property laws more consumer friendly, it is expected that this will further increase the demand for commercial space in Abu Dhabi both in the short and long term.

Lulu Island – Abu Dhabi’s slice of paradise

With a distinctly Arabian flavour, Abu Dhabi introduces itself to the world as the capital of the United Arab Emirates. Dubai maybe the more jubilant and over-enthusiastic neighbour of this nation, never the less, Abu Dhabi serves as a good place to visit for those of us who do not have a deep seated desire to go clubbing every night. The dining, entertainment and shopping venues are just as great, and the people are just as friendly and warm. With the spurt in growth, the country still remains true to its roots and values their seas and desserts.

One of the best things to do while living in Abu Dhabi or visiting it, is to go to Lulu Island. A popular tourist attraction in Abu Dhabi, Lulu Island is man made and covers an area of 1050 acres. Opened in 2007 by the government, this recreational and leisure park is a great escape in to a world of fun, frolic and entertainment for the whole family. Beach front of the island ensure plenty of water sporting activities, cafes and cafeterias serve a wide array of cuisine to suite just about every pallet, while horse and camel riding is also a plausible option. Two artificial fresh water lakes provide a great place for a picnic or to go paddle boating. Still under development, Lulu Island will host a wide variety of other thematic areas with wildlife, fun rides and accommodation.

The Saadiyat Beach Golf Club was officially launched on 28th January 2010 in with a host of golfing stars and celebraties from the world of sport.

The launch was hosted by golfing legend Gary Player, one of the greatest golfers of all time who hit was the first to tee off on the stunning 1st hole.

The event was a hotly contested affair, with Northern Ireland’s young prodigy, Rory McIlroy, leading the charge with a combined team score of 27 under par to win the debut Classic.

And with a wealth of golf’s future stars playing the lush fairways and sweeping greens at Saadiyat Beach Golf Club, Gary Player was optimistic about the future of the sport. The 18-time Major winner tipped McIlroy as the next possible world number one. “He has a great team behind him, bags of talent and one of the best swings in golf. If he continues the way he is going, I have no doubt Rory has the potential to be the next number one,” said Player.

McIlroy, last years European Number 2 and the current world number 11, was full of praise for the Saadiyat Beach Golf Club and its role in helping establish the emirate as a world-class golf destination.

McIlroy said “We start our season in Abu Dhabi and have a three week ‘swing’ in the Middle East. The UAE has become a great destination and with facilities like Saadiyat Beach Golf Club, I can only see more and more golfers coming to play here. It’s ideal for practising and the facilities are world-class”. McIlroy finished third in January’s Abu Dhabi Golf Championship.

A wealth of up-and-coming talent on display — in the form of Melissa Reid, Maria Verchenova and Henrietta Zuel, the Ladies’ European Tour rising stars, and England’s Oliver Fisher — showed the watching crowds why they were widely-regarded as the future of the sport with an impressive on-course display. And the quartet was full of praise for Abu Dhabi’s newest golfing centre of excellence.

“It has been wonderful to come and meet up again with my friends from the Gary Player Group. Mr Player has designed many great courses but this surely has to be one of the most spectacular. I’m looking forward to spending a few more days here in Abu Dhabi,” said Verchenova.

Socio-Cultural Impacts of Tourism in Abu Dhabi: Analyzing Attitudes, Beliefs, and Behavior of Locals towards Tourism

Product Description
Abu Dhabi has experienced enormous change within the last 60 years. From a small fishermen village with 5000 inhabitants in 1950, the discovery of oil in the 1960¿s transformed it into one of the wealthiest capitals of today¿s time. Whereas half a century ago locals lived in mud-huts and had no hospitals nor schools, they now enjoy modern infrastructure, luxury hotels and one of the highest levels of personal income in the region. At the same time tourism in Abu Dhabi is growing at an incredible pace, with the number of guests in the Emirate almost tripling from currently 0.7 to 3 million in 2015. Logically, the question arises what impact this tourism growth has for the local people of Abu Dhabi. Do they profit from this development? Are they in favor of it? How is their life influenced by tourism? Through living in Abu Dhabi for 5 months, conducting interviews, newspaper scans, literature reviews, and a community survey, it was possible for the author to arrive at many interesting findings, and at the same time create a book which explains all important aspects of social and cultural impacts of tourism in a destination.
