Salama, ADEC launch summer challenge in fight against epidemic of road death

collaboration with Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) and with the support of Yas Marina Circuit, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, President of the Automobile and Touring Club of the UAE, has urged hundreds of high school students to accept responsibility for helping to make the UAE’s roads safer.

Sulayem is supporting Salama Summer Challenge 2010, an interactive road safety campaign targeting 4,000 students aged between 14 and 18 at colleges and high schools in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and the western region over the next two weeks.

Exclusively sponsored by Yas Marina Circuit, it is the latest in a series of campaigns to be introduced by Salama, the road safety public awareness initiative launched in 2008 under the patronage of HH Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior.

The summer campaign was launched yesterday at the Higher Colleges of Technology in Abu Dhabi. Crash test videos, driving simulators, seat belt “convincer” devices and testimonials from relatives of road accident victims will be used to drive home key road safety messages to students.

Salama and ADEC have planned for further sessions at Abu Dhabi University, the Institute of Applied Technology, and the UAE University before the campaign continues at another ten campuses.

The Salama initiative is managed by the Emirates Foundation for Philanthropy, and is a partnership with Shell and the Emirates Driving Company, and is supported by the UAE Ministry of Interior.

Sulayem, the 14-times FIA Middle East Rally champion, told students: “This campaign is designed to deliver strong messages to young people of the things we must all do, and the things we must avoid doing, in the interests of road safety.

“While it may not seem cool to wear a seat belt, it’s vital to do this at all times. And it’s the same for passengers as much as for drivers. Some of you are too young to think about driving yet, but you can get into the habit of wearing seat belts now. At the same time you can influence your elder brothers and sisters, and your parents, to do the same when they’re driving you.” “At the same time, don’t be afraid to tell them to slow down if they ignore the speed limit. Those who want to drive fast can go to the new racing school at Yas Marina Circuit to learn new driving skills from professionals. Racing on the roads costs lives.” Sulayem added: “You all know that, and you know that it can be dangerous for people to make or receive phone calls while driving. Learn that lesson now. Try to make sure that whoever is driving you uses a hands free device, keeps it short, and doesn’t lose concentration. Better still, they wait until the car has come to a stop.

“Most importantly, don’t forget what you see and hear today, and don’t let your friends or family forget either. Too many bright young people with the world at their feet lose their lives, or have their lives changed forever, by road accidents. Always keep road safety at the front of your mind. Take responsibility yourselves to make our roads safer.” Richard Cregan, CEO of Yas Marina Circuit, which last week launched the Yas Racing School, said: “It’s encouraging to see that such a strong, combined effort is being made to persuade the young people of the UAE to make road safety a way of life.

“Those who want to drive fast now have a wonderful new opportunity to learn the correct techniques under the guidance of professional instructors at Yas Racing School in a safe and controlled environment.” The Summer Challenge 2010 is the latest in a series of result oriented Salama campaigns and programmes aimed at fighting the epidemic of road traffic deaths and injuries in the UAE. This is done by raising road safety consciousness and awareness, targeting members of all UAE communities, across all ages and nationalities, in partnership with the public and private sectors.

Based on his record-breaking rally driving career which established him as a sporting ambassador for the Arab world, Sulayem is a role model for UAE students and a staunch supporter of road safety initiatives, particularly those targeting young Emiratis.

As a Vice President of the FIA, he also supports international road safety measures implemented by the organisation which, in addition to being the world governing body for motor sport, brings together 222 member clubs in 130 countries that represent more than 100 million motorists and their families

A 517-seat version of the giant aircraft will serve Manchester from 1st September – as the airline marks a double decade of service to the city.

The A380 will replace Boeing 777 aircraft on EK017 from Dubai and EK018 out of Manchester. At the same time, Manchester will become the world’s first regional airport to have a regular A380 service.

“Manchester has become one of the strongest performers in our growing network of regional gateways. DP World Port Sale Controversy of 2006 – Port Security and Terrorism, Dubai Ports World Bid for P&O Steam Navigation

This unique electronic book on CD-ROM has an amazing collection of the finest federal documents and resources about the controversy surrounding the bid by DP World for ports operated by the P&O Steam Navigation Company.

The disc includes material about the Committee on Foreign Investments in the United States (CFIUS), Exon-Florio provisions, and associated U.S. Department of Treasury guidelines. “If there was any chance that this transaction would jeopardize the security of the United States, it would not go forward. The company has been cooperative with the United States government. The company will not manage port security. The security of our ports will continue to be managed by the Coast Guard and Customs. The company is from a country that has been cooperative in the war on terror, been an ally in the war on terror.

The company operates ports in different countries around the world, ports from which cargo has been sent to the United States on a regular basis.” – President George W. Bush, February 21, 2006. President Bush strongly supports the decision to move forward with the DP World transaction. The administration, as required by law, has reviewed the transaction to make certain that it does not in any way jeopardize national security. Under the process conducted by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), officials carefully reviewed! the national security issues raised by the transaction and its effect on our national security.

Twelve Federal agencies and the government’s counterterrorism experts closely and carefully reviewed the transaction to make certain it posed no threat to national security. DP World has signed a letter of assurances making commitments to meet and maintain security standards for the port terminals that they will own and operate in the United States. There are a number of safeguards that are in place in the agreement, and the American people should feel confident that the transaction will in no way harm the security of the Nation’s ports.

DP World, a UAE-based commercial entity, is purchasing the U.S. subsidiary of the London-based P&O Steam Navigation Company. The announcement of DP World’s bid for P&O was made in November 2005, and the news was widely reported in the press and international financial trade publications. The formal CFIUS process was set into motion in December, and the Federal government conducted a thorough review to ensure that port security would in no way be compromised by the deal.

The President has made clear that he stands firmly behind the decision to allow the DP World transaction to move forward. Preventing this transaction by a reputable company to go forward after careful review would send a terrible signal to friends and allies that investments in the United States from certain parts of the world are not welcome. DHS, along with the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and other Federal agencies, sets the standards for port security and ensures that all port facility owners and operators comply with these standards.

DP World will not manage port security, nor will it own any ports. DP World would take on the functions now performed by the British firm P&O – basically the off- and on-loading of cargo. Employees will still have to be U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents. No private company currently manages any U.S. port. The United States has traditionally welcomed Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and provided foreign investors fair, equitable and nondiscriminatory treatment with few limited exceptions designed to protect national security.

The Exon-Florio provision is implemented within the context of this open investment policy. The intent of Exon-Florio is not to discourage FDI generally, but to provide a mechanism to review and, if the President finds necessary, to restrict FDI that threatens the national security. The Exon-Florio provision is implemented by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United

The award is granted based on an evaluation by the Business School at the University of Cologne of the 11,000 participating stands concerning design, creativity, promotional materials and information provided to ITB visitors. The Sharjah stand complied with all the requirements, seeing more than 25,000 visitors flocking to its stand during the exhibition.

The awards ceremony was attended by President of the German Tourism Association, Klaus Lapple, Lord Mayor of Berlin, Fritz Schramma, Prof. Dr. Aad Van Mourik, Dean of the Cologne Business School and ITB Coordinator Peter Wolfgang Klose, who witnessed Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qassimi, Chairman of the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority (SCTDA), receiving the award. H.E. Mohammed A. Al Noman, SCTDA Director General, and members of the Sharjah delegation were also in attendance.

Commenting on Sharjah’s accomplishment at the ITB, Al Qassimi stated that the award – the fourth consecutive award for Sharjah at ITB – reflects the hard work put in by the SCTDA to promote Sharjah by painting a bright picture of the emirate at various international events.

Added Al Qassimi: “The international award gained today, which will be added to the vast list of accomplishments of the SCTDA, adds more responsibility and commitment towards supporting Sharjah’s status on the international tourism map, which we are keen to maintain under the support and guidance of H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah.

“The International Tourism Bourse is undoubtedly one of the most distinguished travel and tourism events in the world, and Sharjah, through 13 years of participation, was again able to achieve successful participation at this international event by winning the Best Arab World Exhibitor Award for the fourth consecutive time, which I’m sure will be a driving inspiration for further achievements in the future.” He added: “As in previous years, the SCTDA stand was beautifully designed to reflect the emirate’s tourism, cultural and historical identity over an area of 303 sq. meters, with accurate publications in both English and German distributed to ITB visitors. A major part of the stand was specified to present and promote Sharjah’s cultural features, and included activities such as Emirati folklore shows, Henna drawing and genuine Arab hospitality.” Spearheaded by Al Qassimi, the delegation representing Sharjah at the International Tourism Bourse included members from 16 establishments from both the government and private sectors.

The SCTDA’s participation in the exhibition is in line with Sharjah’s strategies to promote tourism around the world, to put Sharjah at the lead in terms of the global tourism scene, and to promote the tourism sector in the emirate, which attracts more and more tourists each year due to its distinguished tourism aspects.
